Client Alert: Unemployment Benefits Scam
The FBI is currently investigating an active unemployment insurance scam. The scam involves letters about unemployment insurance that are legitimately from the New York State Department of Labor but are being sent to individuals who did not apply for the payments.
In some cases, individuals who did not apply have received unemployment debit cards. In the event that those cards are used the individuals could be responsible for repaying the costs to the Department of Labor.
The FBI is asking that anyone who receives these Labor Department notices, but did not apply for unemployment benefits, to contact the agency at rochester.bf@fbi.gov.
